Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 at the latest, artificial intelligence (AI) has been a topic of social discussion. Although AI helps humans to solve complex (IT) problems, AI ignores data protection and AI simplifies (computer-aided) mass surveillance. These three aspects were the subject of the Event of the online trade magazine "Inside IT" on Thursday in Zurich. e3 was present on stage in the person of CEO Thomas Fürling. Together with over 120 guests, he looked at the good, the bad and the ugly facets of AI.

The good AI

Thomas Fürling defined "automated" pattern recognition as a good side of AI. It is able to discover correlations that lead to better decisions for companies, their employees and customers. As an information protection expert, however, he warns that AI should be kept away from personal data that is worth protecting. For example, it should be encrypted so that the AI cannot gain access under any circumstances.

The evil AI

AI should not be seen as an isolated instrument. The technology is already powerful enough to do some of the work for humans. But the results and decisions of AI without empathy lack humanity. Thomas Fürling therefore advises giving employees AI as an additional tool for certain tasks. It must also always be clear that the human always has the last word and not the machine.

The ugly AI

The rapid development of AI and the associated increase in complexity can (will) lead to people being overwhelmed. As a result, an ever-increasing proportion of society is at risk of being left behind. Thomas Fürling does not currently see a viable solution to this challenge. He is certain that AI cannot be tackled with laws and regulations. Instead, active cyber defense will be needed to protect society from being overwhelmed.

The three aforementioned good, bad and ugly facets of AI are just a small part of the food for thought outlined by e3 at the "Inside IT" event. Further aspects and suitable ideas on how even today's IT security can help to make dealing with AI easier are summarized in Thomas Fürling's presentation. The slides are available for everyone to Download.

The e3 and Thomas Fürling are looking forward to the discussion with you!
